Difference Between
Western Opera And Chinese Opera
Jacopo Peri
(1561–1633) was the first opera composer in the world. He was from Italy.
Opera is a
classical musical and drama where the actors and actresses sing in high voices.
The whole story is acted out in music and song. Operas were mostly written
during the 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th
century. They were written mostly in Italy, Austria, France, England and Russia.
There is also opera in China but Chinese opera is very different than the
western one. European opera style is the same as the western one one but they
are sung in different languages. They are sung in German, Italian, French,
English and Russian.
The
differences between Western Opera and Chinese opera are the style, costume,
makeup, music, tune, sound and dance.
The western
opera music has a Classical feeling and they use instruments in the orchestra
like Violin, Cello, trumpet and Horn etc.
In Chinese
Opera, the music has an Eastern feeling and they use the Eastern instruments
such as the Liu Qin, Yan Qing and Guzheng etc.

The western
opera singing voices are high in men and women. They sing in tenor or
Countertenor.
In Chinese
opera, they sing in the Eastern female farmer voices.
There are
lots of different designs in costume and make up in Western opera. They can be
dressed in an old fashioned way, fantasy, ancient fashion, medieval fashion,
fancy dress, fiction characters or like the costume characters etc. For example
in The Magic Flute, Tamino (The Prince) can dress in the prince costume back to
medieval or 17th, 18th or 19th century etc.
The Queen of the night would dress in a magic fairy queen costume.
